Child protection in the real world
Out on the road today I caught an amazing programme on Radio 4. In The Choice, Michael Buerk carefully and honestly examined child abuse within a family. Claire and Ian's was an awful story, involving a substantial prison term and sustained rehabilitative work with the Lucy Faithfull foundation. Everyone involved had been to some terrible and disturbing places. What shone through was how the family really prioritised their daughter at every point, and were trying to build an honest future together, with courage and realism.
It's an extraordinary piece of radio, cutting through the pretending and hysteria that sometimes surrounds this subject. Anyone who is serious about the realities of child protection would do well to hear it, and think through the practical and moral issues it raises. It's on the BBC Listen Again Site, here.
