Driving off the Dover ferry, Obama is pushed off pole position on the first news I hear by the Jonathan Ross / Russell Brand juvenile phone message sensation now engulfing this island. Two more BBC executives have resigned, and the whole nation is paralysed. Said message, nasty, foolish and tackily disrespectful to the human beings concerned, wasn’t even funny, unless you find rudeness, in itself, funny.
That said, I’m not right sure why this story has been headlining for over a week now. It seems to have ignited some kind of morbid self-absorbed slow motion Krakatoa down the BBC, with various pillars of respect, morality and civic virute in Fleet Street (as was) leading the charge, whilst having one of their famous periodic fits of hypocrisy — oops, sorry, morality. Everybody has resigned or been sacked, but the story runs on, like some hideous, bloated, media headless chicken. How can it all end?

It hasn't grabbed the headlines quite so strongly on this side of the Atlantic, Alan - in fact, I had to look it up to find out what you were talking about!
Welcome back, by the way!
Welcome back from the retreat. The posted kerfluffle hasn't made it across the ocean to the US instead we are having a night of long knives in the Republican party.
I'm greatly relieved, Tim. It's comforting to know there is a limit to this story's impact.
Right-wing people having nights of the long knives — sounds disturbing. Let's hope that after a night of the long knives they manage to have a night of the long trousers...
