Very sorry indeed to note the passing of Sir Clement Freud; a witty, humane and decent person, indeed a much loved national institution. He served for may years on radio and TV panel games such as Just a Minute and Have I got News for You?Sir Clement’s life of almost 85 years notched up various achievements and points of interest, that not everyone may know (apart from his membership of the Church of England).
Here are 10 of my favourites:
- He was grandson of Sigmund Freud, the shrink, and brother of Lucian Freud, the artist, neither of whom did panel games on radio.
- As a racing enthusiast he wrote a column for many years in the Racing Post. He claimed that his secretarial assistance was part sponsored by Ladbroke’s betting shops, who had quoted odds of 33/1 against his getting into Parliament.
- He served on Field Marshall Montgomery of Alamein’s staff during World War II
- He was happily married to June Flewitt, the inspiration for C. S. Lewis’ Lucy Pevensie in the Chronicles of Narnia novels. The couple had five children.
- He worked as a chef at the Dorchester and started his own restaurant in Sloane Square
He came to national attention with a series of adverts for dogfood called Minced Morsels, where he appeared alongside someone even more lugubrious than he, a bloodhound called Henry. There were several Henrys, but only one Clement Freud.
- He was MP for the Isle of Ely 1973-87, and knighted on leaving the Commons.
- When given an inferior room to fellow MP Winston Churchill on a parliamentary delegation to China, he claimed to have been “Out Grandfathered.”
- In 2002, he beat Germaine Greer in the student election for Rector of the University of Saint Andrews.
- He had a minor bit part in the Wings album Band on the Run.
Freud for thought, you may say...
